Activities
In addition to its many unmatched natural attractions, Lord Howe Island offers a wide range of outdoor activities for a variety of interests and fitness levels. It’s an ideal destination for families, or equally for a romantic getaway.
Sports
From bike riding along picturesque roads and surfing the island’s clean breaks, to a relaxing game of golf or lawn bowls in ideal surroundings, the island’s facilities and natural attractions are sure to keep people of all ages entertained. Lord Howe also boasts great conditions for kiteboarding and windsurfing, provides tennis courts to tempt visitors and locals to a lively game, and is a popular destination for keen sailors.
Bike Riding
Lord Howe Island offers spectacular cycling, with the island’s 13km of scenic roads and tracks perfect for bike riding. On-road tracks wind around the island through lush rainforest and with the speed limit set at 25km per hour, cyclists rule the island roads and pedal power is the favoured mode of transport.
At just 12km long, Lord Howe lends itself well to discovery on two wheels, with visitors and locals using bikes to admire the island and its beaches, shops and restaurants, and to reach walking track starting points. Bike racks are placed at different points around Lord Howe, allowing riders to hop off to enjoy an ocean dip, scenic walk, bite to eat or just to explore the island some more.
Bikes can be hired at Wilson’s Hire and some accommodation suppliers provide guests with bikes for their stay. Helmets are required at all times when riding a bike on Lord Howe Island.
Golf
Overlooking the towering Mt Lidgbird and Mt Gower the Lord Howe golf course is one of the most picturesque golf courses in Australia. The 9-hole course meanders through the lushly vegetated kentia palm forest and out into the gently undulating open fairways along the ocean foreshore – providing the golfer with many challenges along the way.
The golf club offers golfing gear for hire and invites visitors and locals to get involved at the Easter golf tournament and the annual Lord Howe Open Golf Tournament in November, where over $5,000 in prizes are given away. The club also runs a weekly Friday Chicken Run event and the Sunday Social Competition.

Kayaking
Kayaks are a great way to explore the sheltered waters of Lord Howe Island’s lagoon. Kayak solo or explore with family and friends. Cirumnavigate Rabbit Island or take a picnic lunch and explore the beaches of North Bay and Old Settlement Beach. Double and single kayaks are available for hire.
Lawn Bowls
The Lord Howe Island Bowling Club run two major bowls tournaments annually: Ocean View Pairs in March and the Tasman Triples in October.
The Lord Howe Bowling Club gives visitors the chance to come together for a fun and social game of lawn bowls.
The Bowling Club kitchen features delicious island fare with fresh local fish, great value and price.

Sailing
Sailing to the island is an exhilarating way to reach Lord Howe, and cruising yachts are welcomed by locals upon arrival to the island. Sailors can boat their way to Lord Howe Island all year round, anchoring in the lagoon, and are required to pay a mooring fee.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding
The pristine waters of Lord Howe Island’s Lagoon offer perfect conditions for stand up paddleboarding. Sea creatures, such as turtles and Spanish Dancers are often spotted through the clear aquamarine water.
Experienced stand up paddle boarders can head out to the rolling surf at the surrounding outer reef, whilst beginners and intermediate paddle boarders can enjoy the sheltered water of the pristine lagoon.
Boards can be hired from the tour operators on Lagoon Beach.
Surfing
Lord Howe’s pristine waters offer visitors and locals an opportunity to surf some of Australia’s most beautiful beaches against stunning backdrops of lush rainforest and mountainous landscapes. A great surf spot for enthusiastic wave riders, from learners to professionals, the island has a number of breaks, mostly on the outside of the coral reef bordering the lagoon.
Blinky Beach, locally dubbed ‘Champagne Surf’ is a popular choice for catching some waves, and Ned’s Beach can also offer great surf in the right conditions.
Tennis
There are three tennis courts on the island, available to guests of Blue Lagoon, Ocean View and Pinetrees, offering visitors and islanders a great way to stay active on the island.
