World Reef Day 🌊🐠🪸🐬

So what is so special about the marine environment of #LordHoweIsland? 🌊🌊🌊

🌊 The reefs surrounding Lord Howe Island, are the southernmost coral reefs in the world.
🌊 Lord Howe has the only fringing coral reef lagoon in @visitnsw.
🌊 The entirety of the waters of this special place is managed within the Lord Howe Island Marine Park, established in 1999
🌊Parts of the Marine Park are within the #lordhoweisland Group @unesco World Heritage Area, recognised for its outstanding universal values.
🌊 The reef is host to over 90 species of coral and 500 tropical, sub-tropical and temperate fish species, many of which are endemic to the island.
🌊Other parts of the Marine Park include Elizabeth and Middleton Reefs, which are listed as wetlands of international significance under the Ramsar @conventiononwetlands
🌊 The Marine Park is a true under water paradise for swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, diving and cruising!

The mystical, magical forest on the top of Gower .

The summit of Mount Gower, Lord Howe’s highest point, is cloaked in the evocatively named “Gnarled Mossy Cloud Forest”, home to a number of endemic plants, including the threatened little mountain palm, along with endemic animals such as land snails. A research team with the Australian Museum visit the summit annually to uncover the secrets of the land snail communities, which comprise of 70 endemic species, some of which have been listed as critically endangered.

Goat House Cave. The track up to the Goat House Cave is very steep, and is a demanding climb. The track is narrow and is interspersed with tree roots and rocks. There are sections of trail where ropes are used to assist the climbers.🥾
