Get ready to experience the wonders of the universe like never before at the inaugural Dark Sky Festival on Lord Howe Island, taking place from 26th April to 1st May 2025. Thanks to Destination NSW, this one-of-a-kind event invites visitors to explore the spectacular night skies, engage in immersive activities, and discover the island’s unique nocturnal wildlife and pristine natural beauty. Our second annual Dark Sky Festival is planned for 16th May to 23rd May 2026.

Event Highlights:
The Dark Sky Festival offers a diverse range of activities that celebrate Lord Howe Island’s unrivalled stargazing conditions and its commitment to preserving its dark sky environment. From expert-led stargazing and immersive astrophotography workshops to one-of-a-kind dining experiences, there’s something for everyone.

Dancing Under The Stars
Join locally based musicians and DJs for a night of dinner and dancing under our pristine night skies.

Dark Sky Stargazing
Join our expert astronomer for a stargazing experience using state-of-the-art telescopes and laser pointers. Learn how to identify stars, constellations, and planets, and explore deep-space objects like the Orion Nebula, star clusters, and galaxies. This guided stargazing experience is perfect for guests of all ages.

Dark Dining – A Culinary Experience
Indulge in a one-of-a-kind dining experience at Driftwood Bar and Restaurant with a five-course tasting menu created by Executive Chef Thorne Nykler. Dine in a completely darkened setting, where your senses of taste and smell guide you through an unforgettable culinary journey.

Twilight Botanica Dining Experience
Experience a stunning five-course dinner crafted by Instagram sensation and Executive Chef David Chlumsky at Anchorage Restaurant. Inspired by the island’s natural bounty, this immersive dining experience includes a welcome cocktail featuring Dark Sky Gin and is served under the stars, surrounded by the beauty of Lord Howe Island.

The Science Talks
Join a panel of astronomy, science, and environmental experts, including Fred Watson OAM and Marnie Ogg, for open discussions on fascinating topics like “Why Lord Howe should consider becoming a Dark Sky Sanctuary” and “What’s Really Out There?”. Enjoy these thought-provoking talks at The Brewery while savouring pizza and locally brewed beer.

Astrophotography – Mastering the Night Sky
Join Matt Dodds (@stargazing_adventures) for an intimate astrophotography workshop (maximum 10 guests). Learn how to capture stunning images of the night sky with your DSLR or mirrorless camera, guided by a professional photographer. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced, you’ll leave with breathtaking photos of the Milky Way and beyond.

Nocturnal Walk with Ian Hutton
Explore Lord Howe Island’s nocturnal wildlife with naturalist Ian Hutton. On this guided walk, you’ll discover endemic species, including bats, butterflies, and the iconic woodhen, while learning about the island’s volcanic geology and conservation efforts.
