If you visit Little Island on Lord Howe in the late afternoon during winter, you may witness one of Lord Howe's most extraordinary sights as Providence Petrels return to their burrows beneath Mt Gower and Mt Lidgbird. Before long, spring will arrive and these remarkable birds will set off across the ocean once again, not to return until next year.

Beneath these lush Lord Howe canopies, dedicated conservation teams are working year-round to protect native forests, rare plants and wildlife from invasive weeds.

Over 700 introduced plant species have been recorded on Lord Howe Island. Of these, 270 have recognised invasive characteristics, making weed management a vital part of protecting this World Heritage island.

Visitors can also play a part through volunteer opportunities, including the long-running Friends of Lord Howe program and the Lord Howe Island Board's winter volunteer program.

Together, these efforts help ensure the Island's forests remain as breathtaking beneath the canopy as they are from above 🌿

Seabirds are one of the most defining sights of Lord Howe

The sooty terns are currently away from Lord Howe Island, spending the non-breeding season out across the Pacific Ocean. They will return in spring to breed, when large colonies form around the Island. At this time of year, the incredible Providence petrels are present and can be seen flying around the southern mountains in the afternoon. Thousands return to the Island during the season and their calls can be heard echoing across the slopes.

Each season is distinct and each species is unique to Lord Howe Island’s natural cycle 🕊️
