Some facilities are available. Please check with your accommodation property.

What To Bring

  • Dress is casual, smart casual for evenings.
  • Swimming costume, hat, and sun protection.
  • Shoes for bush and reef walking, flip flops.
  • Day pack for walks and beach trips.
  • A raincoat and windcheater are recommended owing to occasional showers and squalls that can occur at any time of the year.
  • Pack required medication in your carry-on baggage for travel on Qantas Link.

The weight limit on Lord Howe flights is 14kg per person of checked baggage and 7kg of carry-on baggage. Excess baggage, such as golf clubs and surfboards, are carried on a subject-to-load basis. They are not guaranteed uplift on the same flight as the passenger, but usually do arrive within a day or two, if not the same flight.

Preserving Paradise

Lord Howe’s environment is pristine and we ask our visitors to help keep it that way. Your hosts will advise you on recycling and we ask that you take care to ensure that you do not unwittingly carry any unwanted pests to the island, including seeds (on shoes or clothes) etc.

Post Office

Australia Post has a postal agency on Lord Howe Island open from 10.00 am to 1 pm and 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm Monday to Friday. Airmail is despatched and received every day. Surface mail arrives fortnightly by ship from Port Macquarie in northern New South Wales.

Anglican, Catholic, and Seventh Day Adventist.

Transport

You’ll quickly understand why Lord Howe does not need public transport. All accommodation properties meet flights, providing free transport for arriving and departing guests. Walking is a pleasure on the island as you’re never far from shops, restaurants, or beaches. There are bicycles and helmets for hire and a limited number of rental cars.

Is It Safe?

Yes! Families love Lord Howe: children can safely roam free. There are no snakes, no sand flies, no stingers. The island has a 25 kph speed limit and the roads are shared by walkers, cyclists & vehicles.

Conference Facilities

Some larger accommodation establishments are able to cater for conferences with up to 30 or 40 delegates. There are two church halls, bowling club rooms, a golf clubhouse, a small meeting room in the Museum complex, and a 150 seat community hall/cinema.

Communications

Many island holidaymakers are delighted to find that Lord Howe Island is beyond the reach of mobile phones. Public phones and internet connections are available at various locations on the island.

A local internet service provided by Thornleigh Farm is available in the CBD area including Anchorage Restaurant, the Crooked Post Bar and near the ProDive boatshed. Connect your device to “Public Internet” by going to Settings > WiFi network. $11 for 1GB or $29 for 3GB. The Lord Howe Island Museum also offers wireless internet on the premises. Pricing plans vary between $5 and $50 depending on the amount of data required.

The Visitor Centre located at the Lord Howe Island Museum is open Monday to Friday 9am to 1pm and on Sunday 10 am -1 pm.

Medical

A small hospital and dispensary are situated on Lagoon Road. Consulting and dispensary hours at this four-bed hospital are 9.00 am to 12.30 pm Monday to Friday. However, the doctor and nursing staff are on 24-hour call in case of emergencies.

Time

Australian Eastern Summertime during daylight saving. Winter is 30 minutes ahead of Australian Eastern Standard Time.

Banks, Credit Cards, and Money

The currency is Australian Dollars.

All major Australian banks (except ANZ) accepted at the Post Office for deposits & withdrawals with your electronic card. Post Office is open Mon-Fri 10 am-1 pm and 2 pm-4 pm.

Credit cards are accepted widely but not everywhere. There is an automatic banking machine (ATM) available 24 hours a day at the Lord Howe Island Bowling Club’

Note: Foreign currency and/or traveller’s cheques are not processed on Lord Howe Island.

Shopping

A variety of stores carry groceries, liquor, fruit, vegetables, pharmaceuticals, clothing, souvenirs, and snacks. There is also a small hairdressing salon, limited beauty, and masseur facilities, and arts and crafts. Island prices are generally higher than mainland prices owing to freight costs.

Electricity

240V AC 50 cycles, three-pin plug – the same as mainland Australia.
